How Music Affects a Child’s Brain Development

Is there real science behind the link between music and intelligence? Explore how learning an instrument shapes auditory processing and executive functions in the developing brain.

A child sits at a piano and tries to play a simple melody. At first glance, it seems like a musical exercise, but consider what the child's brain is actually doing. They are reading or remembering notes, listening to pitch, controlling the movements of individual fingers, keeping rhythm, and noticing mistakes—often while coordinating both hands. Few everyday childhood activities require so many processes to operate simultaneously.

This leads to an intriguing question: does learning music actually affect the way a child's brain develops? The scientific answer is fascinating, but more nuanced than popular claims suggest. Music training is associated with measurable changes in how children process sound, but claims that it simply increases IQ go beyond what the strongest scientific evidence currently supports.

A Child's Brain and Neuroplasticity

The brain develops rapidly throughout childhood, with neural connections continuously modified in response to experience. This ability to change is known as neuroplasticity. Just as learning another language changes the brain, instrument lessons provide a particularly rich form of experience where the brain must solve complex sensory and motor problems.

Engaging Multiple Systems

Active music-making is a complex form of learning because it engages auditory, motor, visual, and memory systems together. Research following children over time has found that musical instruction leads to changes in auditory processing and its underlying neural systems. This suggests that practising music really can train the brain to become more specialised at processing sound.

Impact on Attention and Memory

Children use executive functions to manage their thinking, including inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. An orchestral setting requires a child to ignore distractions, monitor a conductor, and adjust to others. While evidence is promising that musical training may exercise these functions, researchers caution that it does not automatically mean a child's general memory will improve in every unrelated situation.

The IQ and Mozart Myth

The 'Mozart Effect'—the idea that simply listening to classical music makes children more intelligent—has been widely exaggerated. The developmental benefits of music come from the active learning process, not from music acting as a magical stimulus. Furthermore, while associations exist between music and academic performance, researchers note that factors like family background and motivation often play a larger role than the music itself.

Music and Language

Music and language share certain auditory demands, such as timing, pitch, and patterns. Some studies have found small positive effects on language-related abilities, though parents should not assume that piano practice replaces the need for focused reading and writing support.

Early Years and Instrument Choice

For the youngest learners, early years music should focus on exploration through rhythm, singing, and movement rather than technical mastery. When choosing an instrument, there is no scientific proof that one is 'better' for the brain than another. Whether it is the coordination of the piano or the rhythmic focus of drums, the best choice is the one the child will want to continue learning.

Value Beyond the Test Scores

Music education does not need to increase mathematics scores to be justified. It teaches a child to listen carefully, recognise patterns, perform with others, and experience the satisfaction of mastering a difficult skill. These are valuable outcomes in their own right, providing essential child development support through creative expression and persistence.

Music does not need to make a child 'smarter' to contribute meaningfully to their development. Learning to make music is itself a powerful form of learning.
