Don't Prepare Your Child to Compete With a Machine
If AI becomes exceptionally good at a particular task, training a child to be slightly faster at that same task is a poor strategy. We teach mathematics so children understand quantities and relationships, not to beat a calculator. Furthermore, adult life rewards those who discover which question should be asked. While AI is excellent at solving specified problems, defining those problems requires human insight. We must teach children to ask if they are even solving the right problem.
Creativity and Communication
AI can produce technically competent stories and designs, but value will shift toward original direction, taste, and meaningful creative writing. Similarly, communication is broader than producing text; it involves listening, persuading, and reading a room. Directing powerful tools effectively requires a deep understanding of human needs.
Social Intelligence and Leadership
Human organisations depend on trust, motivation, and conflict resolution. Children develop social intelligence through real interactions like team sports, group projects, and child development support activities. These experiences prepare them for leadership, which involves taking responsibility and making decisions under uncertainty.
Adaptability and Resilience
Nobody knows which tools will dominate in fifteen years, so teaching specific software is less important than teaching how to learn. A child who can adapt to new systems will always have an advantage. Resilience is equally vital; activities like sport or programming teach children to recover from failure and try again.
The Necessity of Deep Expertise
Knowledge is necessary to recognise nonsense. A child who knows nothing about a subject cannot critically evaluate an AI's output. Deep expertise in fields like science or engineering allows a professional to identify questionable assumptions that a novice would miss. AI increases the productivity of those with deep knowledge rather than replacing the need for it.
A Balanced Approach to Skills
Does this mean specific technical skills are obsolete? Not at all. Learning coding remains a useful way to understand logic and automation. However, parents should seek balance by encouraging activities that develop different dimensions:
Thinking: Mathematics, science, and research.
Creating: Music, design, and an art workshop.
Communicating: Languages, debate, and singing and vocal training.
Technology: Robotics, 3D design, and digital creativity.
Independence: Personal projects and problem-solving.
The goal is not to identify a skill machines can never touch. It is to develop a child who brings something valuable to the partnership with the machine. Your child does not need to become better than AI; they need to become excellent at knowing what to ask, what to believe, and what to create.
